Research carried out by Gas Safe Register showed that only two in five people check if the engineer they hired is Gas Safe registered. Illegal gas workers could put you at risk for gas leaks, fire, and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Only Gas Safe registered engineers can work on gas appliances, and there are multiple ways to ensure that they are legally qualified to do so.
You can check if an engineer is registered on the Gas Safe Register website. This has a ‘Check the Register’ service where you enter the 7-digit card number which is found on the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card. You can also check by postcode or business name.

Check the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card
A gas engineer should show you the Gas Safe ID card before starting work in your home. The card has details on both the front and the back.
Details on the front of the card:
- The engineer’s photo
- The licence number
- The start date
- The expiry date
- The security hologram
- The engineer’s name
- The registration number
Details on the back of the card:
- The kind of work the engineer is qualified to do
Remember to check if the qualifications are up to date.
